About
On a hike at Mt. St. Helens, where excellent views were promised but Pacific Northwest weather intervened.

I'm a writer who lives in Washington. I knit, hike, powerlift, and hang out with my dog, Emerson, who's a miniature American shepherd. I also work in product marketing at a software company, where I'm focused on machine learning, generative AI, and agentic AI.

This site will be the home of my creative projects, including a forthcoming newsletter and (I hope) future book projects.

More about me

I'm a former journalism professor who moved on from academia after 15 years of teaching and research. I became interested in AI and data science toward the end of my academic career. I learned to code and studied machine learning, eventually adding a master's degree in data analytics to my Ph.D. in journalism.

In 2020, I made a career shift into the software industry, where I've worked for the last 5 years as a writer and marketer.

Curious about my professional work? Here's my LinkedIn. You can also check out my writing across a bunch of genres in my Authory portfolio, which also contains podcast episodes I hosted and other content I've worked on.

My favorite part of my work is doing deep research on new ideas and information, then tying it all together in new (and sometimes unexpected) ways that I can share with others. I truly love the process of turning complex concepts into fun, engaging content.

An added tidbit whose relevance will become clear as this site and my projects progress: Over the last 15 years, I've had two amazing dogs with distinctive and delightful personalities – the aforementioned Emerson, and his predecessor, Nellie, who was likely a Papillon and Aussie mix. They have been life-changing companions. My experiences with them strongly influence my creative work - their energy, enthusiasm for life, endless curiosity, and openness to whatever new experiences come their way.
